Handrail for Interior stairs

Building handrails for interior stairs in Australia must comply with the Building Code of Australia (BCA) standards. Here’s a general guide on how to build handrails for interior stairs in Australia:

  1. Determine the height of the handrail: The handrail height must be between 900mm and 1100mm measured vertically from the stair tread nosing.

  2. Choose the material: The handrail can be made of different materials, such as timber, metal, or glass. Make sure the chosen material meets the BCA requirements.

  3. Decide on the design: The handrail must be continuous and smooth, with no sharp edges or corners. The handrail should also be capable of being firmly grasped by a person’s hand.

  4. Measure and mark the location of the handrail: The handrail must be installed on both sides of the stairs, and it should extend horizontally at least 300mm beyond the top and bottom of the stairs.

  5. Install the brackets: The handrail brackets should be installed securely and spaced no more than 1.2m apart.

  6. Attach the handrail: Secure the handrail to the brackets using screws or bolts. Ensure that the handrail is firmly attached and can withstand a load of at least 0.6 kN/m.

  7. Finish the handrail: Sand the handrail to ensure there are no rough edges or splinters. Apply a finish or paint the handrail to protect the material and improve the appearance.

  8. Test the handrail: Once the handrail is installed, test it to ensure that it is secure and that it meets the BCA requirements.

It’s important to note that the above steps are general guidelines, and it’s essential to follow the specific requirements outlined in the Building Code of Australia. It’s recommended to consult with a licensed builder or a building certifier to ensure compliance with the regulations.
